The third time was a charm for the first time League Champions, finally getting it done in their 3rd trip to the League Championship Series in the last 5 years. Only 3 current Flying Dogs were with the team in their first LCS appearance in 2004, manager Nick Collingham, shortstop Steve Canale and left fielder Rob Stup. After falling behind 2 games to none in the 5 game series, the Dogs fought back to win the final 3 games.
The Flying Dogs bats were cold for most of the playoffs, relying mostly on their solid pitching to make their way to the LCS. After scoring only 2 runs in the first 2 games of the series, with their backs against the wall the Dogs came out swinging in game 3. After an early 1-0 deficit, the bats came to life in the 3rd inning smashing back-to-back-to-back home runs from Fulda, Roebuck and Buchholz. Rob Moses recorded the first LCS win, pitching a complete game and allowing only 3 runs.
The Dogs kept the momentum going back to Taneytown for game 4 as they scored 4 runs off the Falcons ace in the 2nd inning, all the runs they would need in the dramatic, momentum changing 4-3 victory. Chase Wolf picked up the complete game victory for Frederick in his second start of the series.
In game 5 the Dogs sent their ace Matt Buchholz to the hill in the most important game of the season. The Dogs bats struggled to cash in runners in scoring position but managed 2 important runs in the game as Buchholz shutout the 6 time MMSPBL champs for the victory.
Next up for the Flying Dogs is the NABF Regional tournament in Salisbury, MD on August 7 – 10. The winner of the tournament will go on to the World Series in Louisville, KY the following week.
After returning the Dogs will go on to represent the League in the Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball State Championships on August 23rd at Harford Community College.
